Plumbers tape is a real wonder. A stretchy, smooth polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) that seals water and gas pipe fittings, it is usually packaged on spools that look like surgical tape. Its main function, of course, is to securely and precisely join two surfaces. Accidentally discovered in 1938, this tape has been a fixture in plumbing repair for decades.
Where Can Plumbing Tape Help Me?
Since it is not a permanent liquid compound, plumber’s tape can be used for joint connection and disconnection without causing the usual mess. It is perfect for both threaded metal or rigid polymer pipes, and it does a superb job when connecting plumbing fixtures, including your typical showerheads and faucets.
How Do I Use the Tape?
Remember opposite, opposite, opposite is the way to go. You must always wind the plumber’s tape in the opposite direction to which you are going to screw the pipe into the fitting. Once you’ve determined the right way to go, be sure to wipe off the threads, get to the male end, and securely hold the end of the tape so that it grabs on the second thread from the end. Then keep a firm but even tension and wind the tape toward the middle of the pipe. Keep going until you get to the second-from-the last thread on the opposite end. At that point, you want to wind your way back to the starting point. Finally, tear off the tape and make it flush against the layer underneath.
Where Do I Get the Tape?
You can find plumber’s tape at any of your local hardware stores or big-box retailers. In some cases, it may be called thread-seal tape or Teflon tape, so be sure the check with the salesperson. Keep in mind, it may not be prudent to buy the cheapest brand as the quality of the tape is critical. If you use lousy tape, there is a greater chance it may fail, leading to catastrophic flood damage.
